Sharjah’s history stretches back thousands of years, shaped by its position between desert and sea. Archaeological discoveries across the Emirate reveal some of the earliest evidence of human presence in Arabia, while later communities built their livelihoods around fishing, pearling, dhow building and maritime trade. By the 18th century, Sharjah had emerged as an important port on the Arabian Gulf under the Al Qasimi rulers. Today, this heritage remains visible in the restored houses, souqs and narrow lanes of the Heart of Sharjah, where the city’s historic architecture forms part of its contemporary cultural life.
