Art & Culture
Five minutes by car, the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque stands among the architectural achievements of the modern era: 40,000 square metres of translucent Indian sandstone and Persian-influenced marble, completed in 2001. The central dome houses a Swarovski crystal chandelier with gold-plated metalwork. The hand-woven Persian carpet – 1.7 billion knots, worked by 600 female weavers over four years – deserves time in front of it.
The Royal Opera House Muscat draws acclaimed international artists into a programme rooted in Arabian culture. The National Museum traces Omani heritage from the earliest settlements on the peninsula.
The Bait Al Zubair Museum in Old Muscat holds an extraordinary private collection of Omani artefacts within a carefully preserved heritage house. Bait Al Baranda, by the Corniche and Muttrah Souk, brings the history of Muscat to life through exhibits ranging from geology to maritime history and folk art.
