At-Turaif is the natural starting point. Allow more time than you think you need – the UNESCO World Heritage Site is extensive, endlessly intriguing, and its detail deserves attention. Guided tours are available and repay the time.
The Wadi Hanifa valley is worth exploring on foot or by vehicle. Date palms, terraced hillsides and light that shifts through the day make it a landscape that changes with the hour.
Riyadh is close enough for a half-day of discovery. The National Museum is a good place to start; beyond it, the city’s gallery and dining scene has its own character and momentum.
